Life’s Trivial Struggles on Both Sides of the Pond

No matter where you live, everyday life has a way of keeping you on your toes, and making sure you keep your sense of humor and perspective!

So after yesterday’s math and fact filled post about gas (petrol) prices on both sides of the pond (https://yankeebrit.blog/2023/02/16/what-is-the-price-of-gas-petrol-in-yank-vs-brit-countries/ ), I thought I’d give my brain a rest and share a little humor. Share how, no matter where you live, life’s everyday small challenges will follow you and make sure you keep your sense of humor!

Last Sunday, when I posted about our lovely walk at the marina https://yankeebrit.blog/2023/02/12/a-day-at-the-marina-always-a-nice-way-to-spend-a-sunday-afternoon/ and a delish Sunday Roast https://yankeebrit.blog/2023/02/12/a-yummy-sunday-roast-to-help-warm-up-after-our-marina-walk/(opens in a new tab), a few other things happened as well!

We came home from our refreshing walk around the marina and started cooking our pork roast with crackle, potatoes and veggies. Of course a little olive oil was added to the roasting pan. After about 30 minutes in the oven, the smoke alarms went off all through our condo (flat). I mean every alarm was sounding! So, naturally we started fanning at the one in the kitchen, slowly opened the oven door and thought—“hmm, guess I should have cleaned the oven!” The alarms kept ringing, and ringing, and ringing. We then noticed it was the alarm in the living room (lounge) that had a red light flashing as well. At this point, we had opened two sets of doors, a few windows, and set up a fan blow the smoke outside through the patio doors. And…starting fanning at the alarm in the living room (lounge). That worked! The alarms stopped, until they started again. My husband asked if the roasting pan may have a leak. “I said “No way! How can a ceramic roasting pan have a leak? I’ve had ceramic roasting pans in the past that lasted decades!”

So….we cleaned the mess in the oven as best we could and finished cooking the roast and veggies and had a lovely dinner. When we started the clean-up after dinner, we noticed there was a real oily mess on the counter where the roasting pan had been….so yep! The roasting pan had cracked.

Okay–so we broke up the roasting pan and put it in a large trash bag (bin bag) and decided a glass of wine and a Gin and Tonic were in order. Sat down on the couch in the den (snug), and….spilled my glass of red wine all over the couch! Okay—so, clean up that mess. And…pour another glass of wine of course! Never give up, that’s my motto!

You’d think we’d had enough right? But no! The following day hubby brought out the trash (rubbish), while I was in bed with an oncoming migraine! Still not sure if the migraine was brought on from the mess of the day before or the wine, but thank goodness it wasn’t a horrible one. Anyway…back to hubby taking out the trash (rubbish). When I finally ventured out of bed with a dull throbbing headache but at least no longer a full fledged migraine, my hubby showed me his finger. Wrapped in a band-aid (plaster). He had gashed his finger on … you guessed it … the busted up roasting pan in the trash (rubbish)!

Oh, and did I forget to mention that up until last week we had gone for almost 3 weeks without hot water? Yep, the hot water tank sprang a leak! Thank goodness for family that shared their shower with us (and hot tub!).

The point is, no matter where you live, no matter who you’re with, everyday “stuff” happens. These things I mentioned above are small, trivial, nothing in the grand scheme of things. The important thing for me is having the right person to have it happen WITH! Laughing, dealing, coping, figuring things out together, putting things in perspective…that’s what it’s all about.

P.S. I’m gonna go clean the oven now!
