Gas (petrol) prices is a topic in a lot of countries, let’s explore the differences in Yank vs. Brit countries!
The question of “What is the price of gas?” resonates across the pond. It is always a topic of conversation back in Massachusetts (where I hail from originally)! And let me say this has ALWAYS been a topic of conversation, kinda like the weather! People talk about the cost per gallon, how much it cost to fill up their tank, how many miles per gallon they get!
Many of my family and friends have asked me what a gallon of gas costs over here in Brit country. Well…it’s not that easy of a question to answer! But here goes…
First of all, Yank gallons in Brit world become litres (no, that’s not a typo, litres in Brit, liters in Yank). And of course then there’s the fact that we pay for our litres of petrol in British Pounds here in Brit world and in Yank world we pay for our gallons in U.S. Dollars!
Right now, in Massachusetts, U.S., the average price of gas (petrol), for regular grade unleaded, is about $3.38 per gallon, (last month it was approximately $3.30 per gallon, so still rising)!
Right now in Poole, England the average price of petrol (gas), for regular grade unleaded, is about £1.50 per litre.
So…now the translation!!
One gallon = 4.54 litres
One GBP, (Brit pound) = $1.21 in US dollars.
In Brit world that gallon of gas that costs the Yanks about $3.38, would cost approximately £6.81 in Brit pounds, converted to Yank USD it would be $8.21 for that same gallon of gas!!
Here’s how I got there:
4.54 (litres in a gallon) X £1.50 GBP (per litre) = £6.81 GBP (per gallon) = $8.21 USD per gallon of gas!!
WHEW!!!
To put it another way: A Renault Clio, kinda like a Ford Fiesta, (yes, there are different models of cars in Brit vs. Yank world!) holds about 40 litres of petrol (gas), so about 9 gallons of gas. To fill up this small, compact, 5 speed manual passenger car, in Brit world it would cost, on average, about £60 Brit pounds. That’s about $72 US dollars! If you were in Yank world, the same car (Renault Clio), would cost about $30.00 USD, or £25 Brit Pound (GBP).
Again, WHEW!!! You think it’s easy answering these questions!

Maybe that’s why you see cars like this in Brit world, 1.0 liter (litre) engine.
This car holds approximately 28 litres of fuel and gets about 40 MPG’s. It would cost about £42 GBP (in Brit country) to fill up this car. In Yank country, this same car would hold about 7 gallons of gas. It would cost about $24 USD to fill up with gas.

And we see vehicles like this in Yank country, 6.7 liter (litre) engine.
This truck holds approximately 32 gallons of diesel and gets about 12 MPG’s. It would cost about $115 USD (in Yank country) to fill up this truck. In Brit country, this same truck would hold about 145 litres of fuel. It would cost about £246 Brit Pounds to fill up with diesel. (NOTE: These numbers are based on diesel not gas (petrol).

Another reason larger vehicles are more prevalent in Yank country (besides the cost of gas (petrol) being lower), is due to the sheer size of the United States, The roads are wider, parking spots are bigger, and garages are bigger in Yank country. I wouldn’t even attempt to drive any size Dodge Ram truck on some of the Brit roads!
A funny story ~ when my Brit hubby saw some of these large vehicles in the states, he of course wanted to know what the size of the engines were, what was the MPG? When I told him some of these trucks got about 12 miles to the gallon, he said “Geez, you must have to fill the fuel tank up every twenty minutes!” Of which I responded, “Don’t be silly! These fuel tanks hold about 35 gallons of gas! And the larger ones even offer an extra tank to increase the driving range!” He thought that was brilliant! The Yanks…just make things BIGGER, forget the MPG’s!!!
I’m not making light of the cost of living right now in any part of the world. Times are tough all over, and not just with the price of gas (petrol). What I am trying to do is give a little insight into certain topics and provide a little comic relief while doing so. I also hope to help us all realize that things are difficult everywhere. Think globally, try and find empathy, be more understanding of the world around you…and not just with the price of gas (petrol).
