Weight, temperature, cooking and baking measurements…. all different across the pond. Read on for some helpful hints and tools!
In Brit country, we use a unique mishmash of Metric (Brit country) and Imperial systems (Yank country) for measurements. For example, gas (fuel/petrol) is sold in liters (litres-Metric), yet gas (fuel) efficiency is measured in MPG (miles per gallon-Imperial). Road signs give distance information in miles. Milk is sold in liters (litres), but beer in pints.
I’ve done a few prior posts that go into more detail around the price of gas (fuel/petrol) and Celsius vs. Fahrenheit. Take a look at the links below for more detailed info!

Weight is a completely different story! Brit country measures weight in kilograms and stones, while Yank country measures in pounds and ounces. When I step on a scale in Brit country, I must say, 57 kilos looks sooooo much better than 126 pounds!! The formula for the weight conversion is Kilos x 2.205. A weight measurement in stones sounds even better! The stone, or stone weight, is still an Imperial measurement, but not used in Yank country. It’s unit of mass is equal to 14 pounds. So again, weighing about 9 stone sounds soooo much better than 126 pounds!
And ounces? Although the word is the same in both Brit and Yank worlds, the fluid ounces are different, because in Yank country the gallons are different. Rather than a gallon being based on a standard fluid ounce, the fluid ounce is based on the gallon of which it is a part. A Yank customary fluid ounce is 1⁄16 of a US liquid pint and 1⁄128 of a US liquid gallon or exactly 29.5735295625 mL, making it about 4.08% larger than the Imperial fluid ounce. Confused?? Ok, long story short, if you order a pint of beer in Yank country, you’re getting more beer than you would in Brit country!!

I knew that would make it easier to understand!

For me, the hard part is cooking. When I relocated to Brit country from Yank, I brought my old Betty Crocker cookbook with me (everyone in Yank country has one of these—right!!). It was my “go-to” cookbook, for basic recipes, substitutions, for showing different cuts of meat, for what internal temps of the meat should be when cooked, and all my fave baking recipes! I also brought some family recipes from mum, grandma, etc. Yet, when I tried to bake over here, the results were not always favorable to say the least. My famous white chocolate cheesecake came out runny!! My homemade Nestle Tollhouse cookies came out flat! I recently found this website, https://www.sweet2eatbaking.com/uk-us-conversion/ and it has this great conversion chart!! Not just a conversion chart but also some common ingredients that have different names from Yank to Brit! I wish someone had shared this site with me when I first arrived!!!

I also purchased these measuring cups and spoons which have both methods of measurements! Awesome tools!

So, bake on, measure on, convert on, whatever you don’t give up!
