Athelhampton is a lovely Tudor mansion worth visiting any time of year!
Last week I posted about Las Vegas, in Yank country (https://yankeebrit.blog/2023/02/22/lets-visit-vegas-in-yank-country/). Today, let’s travel back to England and visit a stately mansion and gardens!
Athelhampton is located in the Piddle valley, between Tolpuddle and Puddletown. It is located northwest from where I reside in Poole, England, about a half hour drive but is still in the county of Dorset, and is located about 3 hours southwest of London. It is a beautiful Tudor mansion with amazing gardens and is considered one of the finest examples of Tudor architecture in the whole of England!.
The house had additions in Elizabethan times when the west wing and kitchen wings were added. In 1891, Athelhampton was purchased by a young Victorian, Alfred Cart de Lafontaine, who created the gorgeous gardens that surround the house. The gardens were my favorite part of the day! There is a gift shop and cafe as well, and yes, they serve CREAM TEA! A lovely way to spend the day…explore the mansion, walk through the amazing gardens and have a lovely cuppa English tea! Visit the site below for more detailed information, opening times and ticket admissions:
These pictures were taken in July last year. I can’t wait to go again in the spring and see the different varieties of flowers all already to bloom!
Let’s take a look at the mansion first:

So beautiful…serene…stately…and exactly what I envision when I think of Classic English Tudor style in the English countryside.
And the flowers!!!

Athelhampton is open year round. I’m more inclined to visit in the spring and summer simply to enjoy the lush, gorgeous gardens and flowers. When I visited in the summer, there were people painting, photographers, families having picnic lunches…an ideal setting.
