Relocating? Staying Connected ~ Share! Share! Share!

Share pics, video chat, send small messages, small gifts, customize your news feed…

SO, you’ve taken the plunge and relocated. You’ve left family, friends, co-workers, lifestyle behind. How do you stay in touch? How do you feel a part of things when you’re not where you used to be??

I share a post previously with a few helpful hints…see below:

https://yankeebrit.blog/2023/01/19/special-edition-making-the-decision-to-relocate-and-making-as-smooth-a-transition-as-possible-for-all-involved/

Well here’s a few more hints…

Share with your friends and family as often as you can and as often as you feel comfortable. I send pics, links of places I’ve been, small emojis just to let them know I’m thinking of them. Send a laugh or an emotion when you’re feeling it. Memes are also a great way to communicate! Sometimes memes are the only way my niece and I communicate for weeks!

Also, don’t forget to ask what’s going on in their world. You may get so caught up in your new world that you forget that they still have daily activities, daily laughs, daily struggles…their life goes on too! With that said, don’t panic when you don’t hear from someone for a few days. I had to come to terms with this big fact!! Their daily lives go on too…they have work, school, errands to run, daily life to live….they haven’t forgotten you!!

Use whatever social media you’re comfortable with! I have Facebook, Instagram, Linked and this blog, as well as the typical FaceTime, WhatsApp and messaging! You can have “watch parties” via some streaming services. Watch the super bowl together, watch your favorite TV program together, play online video games together! You can even play World, Quordle, or Scrabble as a daily event with online apps and sites! Be creative!!!

One way I stay connected is I keep my eye on the weather in New England (where I hail from), which is always ever changing! , When I see a snowstorm, heavy rainfall, a heatwave or any other extreme weather patterns, I pop a message. I ask how they’re doing, did they lose power, did they have to work from home, did the grandkids school get cancelled! It may seem simple, but it works and it’s important! Everyone then feels connected across the pond!

You can also stay connected with local and regional news from wherever you hail from. Create a customized news feed on a news app, add topics you’re interested in, whether it be weather, politics, local news. I use weather apps with different locations as favorites (Boston, MA, Millbury, MA, Worcester, MA, New York City, Brisbane, Australia, Orlando Florida), so that I can keep up with the local weather where all my family and friends live!

One last BIG hint–—don’t forget to immerse yourself locally and globally. You have a new home now, you’ll make new friends, maybe inherit an extended family. Join local groups, volunteer locally, read the local news, learn the local customs! This will enhance you, it will not detract from who you are inside and it will not weaken the family and friend links you already have!

Enjoy!!!!
