Thailand as a Tourist Destination!

Thailand 2023 Thailand as a Tourist Destination ~ Beaches and Islands!

Thailand as a Tourist Destination! There is so much to explore in this lovely country that I’ve decided to break up my recent visit to Thailand into separate posts and categories. Some of my upcoming posts will explore such topics as getting there, the climate, the culture, the lovely surrounding islands and beaches, villa life, as well as visiting the capital, Bangkok!

For our first look at Thailand as a tourist destination let’s explore the amazing food!

In choosing Thailand as a tourist destination, I have to say, I was a little wary about what type of food offerings would be available. I love Thai food, but let’s face it, what we eat in England and the U.S., which may be deemed Thai food, is not quite the same as eating local Thai dishes on some of the islands. Also, one of the folks traveling with us is gluten and lactose intolerant and we were concerned that his options would be very limited. However, rest assured, there is something for everyone everywhere!

Our main stay was on the island of Koh Lanta. Koh Lanta is one of the southernmost islands of Thailand. But more about the climate, location, and many other details in future posts!

Let’s focus on the Thai food for this post!

We found this island to be most welcoming, easy to get around, with cafes, restaurants, and bars in abundance!

The first place we visited was on the afternoon we arrived. After 30+ hours of travel we were hungry, tired and ready to unwind. The Why Not bar/restaurant happened to be a 3-minute scooter ride, or about a 10-minute walk from our villa and was situated beachfront. So….perfect for our first Thailand tourist destination!

While I am tagging the Why Not as a “tourist destination”, it is also a destination for the many local villagers and fishermen. The Why Not has an extensive menu as do most all the cafes and restaurants we visited. The menu was staggering. Besides classic Thai dishes. there were also curries, stir-fry dishes, abundant, freshly caught seafood offerings, as well as quite a few “western” dishes for those less daring!  At first, I must say, I was a little doubtful that all the menu items could be prepared in a quality manner. Let me assure you, everything we had was beautifully presented, freshly prepared and delish at all of the restaurants we visited!

Have a look at some of the delicious food we enjoyed at the Why Not Bar!

The daily fresh caught seafood was presented on ice in a thatched beach hut right on the beach. You can choose which piece of fish or which langostinos you wanted, and they would grill them up right in front of you!

We also frequented many small roadside cafes and restaurants. Just scootering down the road and we would see someplace that caught our eyes…and bam!

Check out this Thailand tourist destination~a small hand painted sign on the side of the road…the view was amazing, a small beach hut with a thatched roof, 3 generations cooking and serving, and… it was amazing 🥰

Furthermore, on the same beach as the Why Not was another bar restaurant that we frequented, Baanlanta, about a 2-minute walk from Why Not!  Still situated directly on the beach, with amazing views, fantastic service and delicious food. There was the Viewpoint, a short scooter ride into town, the Diamond Cliff Beach Restaurant, a little more of a full size and full service restaurant, (but still beach casual, great view and comfy), was also a short scooter ride and turned out to be one of our faves. Also, the Shine Talay in Old Town Koh Lanta…just to name a few!! !

Wherever you go, maybe all of the above plus more, the food options, presentation, friendly staff, and local flavors are all amazing to experience.

A few more pics of the variety of menu items to explore in Thailand as your tourist destination:

Again, as I stated at the beginning of this post, no need to worry about whether there will be something on the menu to satisfy.

Almost any dish on the menus can be adapted to suit your desire for “spiciness”. All dishes are cooked to order and you can customize to suit your taste buds!. I tried a lot of the classic Thai dishes, wanting to experience all I could. However, the hot pan dishes are a great, safe choice, basically a stir fry, served sizzling hot.  Choose to add meat, fish, poultry or veggies!  Also, rice was a staple at every restaurant we visited and I enjoyed many of the different options. Egg fried, vegetable, shrimp, beef, chicken…all varieties of additions to the basic rice dish. You decide!!

If you want to experience the culture, history, and tradition of Thailand as a tourist destination, but prefer to stick to food items you’re accustomed to, no worries. Most restaurants also offered eggs, ham, burgers, chicken dishes, and of course French fries!!
