Explore the beautiful destination of Seville, Spain!  A fantastic “city break” with amazing history, food, culture, and fantastic people.

Explore Seville, Spain over a long weekend! Enjoy the culture, history, and sunshiny warmth ~

Now for those of you in the U.S. Spain may sound so very far away and exotic. While it is exotic, taking a 3-4-day city break in Spain from England is like someone in New England taking a long weekend to get some Florida or South Carolina warmth!

My hubby and I did just that this past week. We stayed 3 nights and 4 full days in the heart of Seville. While normally we lean towards beachy, coastal get-aways, this time we thought a city break to someplace neither of us had ever been to was in order. We made our decision to explore Seville, Spain based on the history, things to do, food culture and of course, warmer weather!

Where to stay in Seville, Spain?

The boutique hotel we stayed at, Casa Romana, was reasonably priced and offered a lovely roof top terraced bar and continental breakfast. The staff were accommodating and the room itself was clean and comfortable. The location was perfect for our 4-day exploration of our city break in Seville. We walked everywhere while exploring and averaged about 5-7 miles a day!  However, if you’re not up for walking, taxis are certainly available, as are horse-drawn carriages and bicycle rentals.

Hubby and I took two horse drawn carriage excursions. It was a great way to acclimate and see the layout of the city, as well as make note of what we wanted to explore more!

What to explore at your destination in Seville, Spain?

There is plenty to see and explore at your city break destination of Seville, Spain!

On our first day, we arrived about midday, we checked into our hotel room and immediately began exploring! A 5 minute walk down the street and we encountered a lovely plaza with more than half a dozen different places to grab a bite. We opted to sit outside and enjoy the sunny and warm atmosphere of Seville in January! We then ambled on and found a really lovely bar filled with locals enjoying the end of the day. While chatting with our fellow patrons, we met a lovely man visiting from Ireland! It’s always fantastic to chat with people along the way, locals, fellow travelers….all add to the experience!

Our first evening, after freshening up a bit, we explored a little further and found some hidden gems, along with a lovely restaurant about a 10-minute walk away.

The walk was absolutely gorgeous with cobblestone streets, very pedestrian friendly, with lovely quaint surroundings and orange tree lined streets! And I do have to add that we always felt comfortable and safe walking around Seville, regardless of the time of day or evening!

The restaurant we happened upon on our first evening in Seville, Postiguillo, was all about tapas, Seville’s way to dine! Tapas is a way to enjoy smaller portions, enabling one to be able to taste a little bit of different dishes! We enjoyed tapas menus at every place we dined!

Check out the link below to view the Postiguillo restaurant site and decide for yourself!

On our second and third days, we explored the amazing historical sites located in Seville.

The Cathedral of Seville is absolutely breathtaking. This site is appealing for many reasons, whether your religious background or your taste for history and art calls out to you, the Cathedral is spectacular. Ornate, extreme attention to detail, mired in history, this cathedral is a must see. The pictures below don’t do it justice, but may they whet your appetite for your own visit!

Something that maybe some of my readers know, but I was unaware, Christopher Columbus is actually entombed at the Cathedral de Sevilla! A nice bit of history!

On we went to the Plaza del Toros. And, whether or not you’re a follower of bullfighting, the arena is a breathtaking piece of history and architecture.

Imagine the effort to build such a place, the history, the drama. It took more than a century to complete the construction of the Plaza del Toros. The construction began in 1762 and wasn’t fully completed until 1881! Have a look below at a couple of pictures, then close your eyes and imagine the arena full of spectators, the bulls, hear the crowds, feel the history surrounding you ~

A different, more modern, current day form of architecture than that of the Cathedral or the Plaza del Toros, is the Setas de Sevilla!

Dating back to 1832, The Encarnación Square Market is the first known food market in the city of Seville. It was built on an old medieval Augustinian convent called “Convento de la Encarnación”.  In 2004 the Hon. Seville City Council unveiled an international ideas competition to redevelop the Encarnación Square. Out of 65 proposals, the international jury chose the innovative Metropol Parasol project, designed by the German architect Jürgen Mayer. The design was inspired by the centennial Ficus in the Plaza de San Pedro and the vaults of the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede in Seville. The structure also provides plentiful shade, offering respite to the city’s intense summers. This amazing structure is immense! There are breathtaking views and the opportunity to immerse yourself in a 4D film experience, soaring through and above the structure.

I’ve saved one of our most enjoyable Seville experiences for last!

The Flamenco style of music and dance is renown in Seville. There were so many choices to experience this amazing piece of the Seville culture! Hubby and I decided on a more intimate experience, with approximately room for 40-50 guests. The cast consisted of two flamenco dancers, one vocalist and one guitar player.  The performers were amazing, Their energy and style was first-class. However, there are there much larger venues in larger theaters if that is your preference!

Below is a clip of the end of our experience. The cast requested no videos or pictures during the entirety of their performance, however, they made accommodations at the end to allow us all to share and remember their amazing performance!

So, whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, a connoisseur of architecture or enjoy experiencing different cultures, or simply enjoy experiencing new places, Explore Destination Seville Spain!
