Across the Pond Quirky Habits

Ice cream cones!

Are you planning on a vacation to lovely England?  Or maybe even planning on relocating?  Read on for some quirky habits across the pond which you can adopt and act like a true native Brit!

I noticed an odd trait while eating dinner with about a dozen or so of my English family and friends!  Don’t know why I noticed, but at one point, I looked around the table.  Everyone was using their knife and fork in a different way than us Yanks!  Now in Yank country, as a right-handed person, if needed, I pick up my knife in my right hand and my fork in my left.  I then proceed to use my knife to carve items on my plate.  I then naturally switch hands and place the fork in my right hand to pick up and bring to my mouth whatever I have just cut into pieces.

Sounds simple right?  Read on for one of the quirky habits of the Brits across the pond ~

The Brits pick up their knife and fork the same as I mentioned above. The difference is they keep the knife in their right hand (as long as they’re right-handed) and proceed to eat their food with the fork in their left hand.  Not too crazy, but quite an odd picture when you look around the table and everyone is in sync except you!

So the question is which way do you think makes more sense?  For consistency then I guess the Brits have it nailed down.  But for using your fork to bring food to your mouth with your dominant hand the Yanks have it nailed down!

Click on your answer below and we’ll see which way feels best!

What about clapping?

Do you ever think about how you clap?  You know, after a musician has performed, or at a concert, or even when you’re recognizing someone for a job well done!  As a Yank, we generally clap with enthusiasm.  Both hands wide open making as much noise as we can, right?  Well, the more reserved Brits will be clapping more reserved!  Either fingers to palms or even one hand claps on their thighs!

And finally, one more quirky habit I noticed across the pond ~

The Brits absolutely LOVE their ice cream!  At any given time of the year, rain or cold, summer or winter, you’ll find Brits walking around with an ice cream in their hand!   They may have coats and a scarf on, but dang it that ice cream will be in hand!  In Yank world, ice cream is def a summer treat.   And generally we make going for an ice cream an actual outing!  We may take a trip to a local farm or creamery to sample our favorite flavor and make an afternoon out of it!   Or bribe the kids with an ice cream outing if they clean their rooms!  So if you’re a big fan of ice cream, across the pond in England is the place to be!  Oh, and the pic on the right?  Called a “lolly” in Brit world!
