Across The Pond Mannerisms

Cheers on the deck at sunset Weather in England

Folks across the pond here in Brit country have a mannerism that takes some getting used to!

Something I’ve noticed here in Brit country is how folks say goodbye, or should I say how long it takes them to say “goodbye!”  Whether your’e on the phone or in person, saying “goodbye” is a lot more involved than what I’m used to as a Yank!  Across the pond in Yank country, generally a phone conversation ends by saying “Goodbye” or maybe even a “Talk later” and then hanging up the phone or pressing send on your mobile!  And in person, maybe a hug or a pat on the back accompanies the “Goodbye” or “See ya later”..

However, here across the pond ending a phone conversation, or taking your leave in person, takes a bit more time!

I first started to notice it when I’d hear my husband on the phone.  The crux of the conversation is over, all questions asked and answered, now comes the extended English version of “goodbye”!  Here’s an example of a phone conversation ending across the pond in Brit country:

“Ok, thank you.  Appreciate it.  Bye now.  Yeah bye.  Thank you. Bye.  I’ll look for that email.  Bye.  Bye.”

And, if it’s a close family member or friend, it would go something like this:

“Great.  See you Sunday.  Thanks.  Bye love.  Bye.  Love you too.  Bye.  Talk soon.  Bye.  Yup, I wrote it down.  Bye.  Bye.  Love you.”

Now, I thought maybe this was just me.  So…I googled it!  Have a listen:

The same goes for saying goodbye in person in Brit country!

The end of a visit could go on for a very long time!  The end to the visit may go something like this:

“It’s getting late, I should probably head home”.

“Yes, it is getting late, you don’t want to be tired in the morning”

“I know!  Such a lovely time though.  Thank you!”

“It was lovely wasn’t it?”

“Yes, so good to see you and share some tea and a chat”

“We must do it again, and soon!”

“We will, definitely will do it again soon”

“Lovely, can’t wait!”

“Me too.  Next time we’ll do it at my flat!”

“Brilliant, until then”

“bye”

“bye”

“Bye”

“Bye”

Sharing these insights always gives me a smile!  People are the same the world over, we all just have our own little idiosyncrasies!  Next time you visit across the pond, take a listen, and then say “Huh, she was right!”.

And for my Brit readers, talk soon, see ya’ later, brilliant chat, ta-ta, bye, bye, love ya!

I love this! I couldn’t believe how many byes they say! We hang up as a Yank and they think we are rude. I laughed when my husband said that.

    1. Excactly! I find myself doing it now! And then reverting to my American ways when I go back for a visit.
