If you’re an American traveling to England, making international phone calls can be a bit challenging. Read on to find what the best options are for your travel!

American travel to England can be so exciting!! But don’t forget to take care of the logistics before you pack! If you’re on vacation, firstly, make sure your cell phone provider offers international calling. Secondly, choose a plan that meets your calling needs. If you’re only traveling to England for vacation (holiday), then you won’t need a comprehensive calling plan.

However, if you’re relocating, then look for the plans that include a certain number of international minutes each month. My plan allows me 500 minutes per month with over 100 destinations including the U.S. and costs me £10 per month.

Once you have your phone plan all set up for your American travel to England, how do you actually dial the number?!

All phone numbers in England (and the entire U.K.), begin with a “0”. When dialing someone in the England from the states, you need to drop the “0” from the phone number and replace it with “44”. “44” is the country code for England. For example, if the England phone number you wish to dial is 07741 876543, dialing from the states, you would dial 44 7741 876543.

On the flip side of the pond, if you are calling from England to the states, the country code for the U.S. is “1”. When dialing the U.S. from England, you would need to dial “001” and then the entire 10 digit phone number. For example, if the American phone number you want to dial is “508 523 9876”, then when dialing from England you would dial “001 508 523 9876”.
