Have a look, see if one of my favorite lighthouses is yours too!
Lighthouses have such an appeal to me! The history and grandeur vs. functionality, beauty vs. starkness. Below are a few I’ve visited over the years! Have a look at the pictorial I’ve put together of some of my favorite lighthouses on both sides of the pond, as well as a couple from Australia and Greece!
Let’s take a look on the Brit side of the pond, and some across other larger ponds!
Anvil Point Lighthouse ~ Swanage, Dorset U.K.
Durlston Country Park is located in Swanage, Dorset U.K. and is home to the Anvil Point Lighthouse. The area is gorgeous and boasts the luscious green countryside that is so beautiful and prevalent ion England. My husband and I have visited this lighthouse a few times. We’ve sat in the grass and listened to the waves crash, enjoyed the countryside and the natural beauty of where this lighthouse is situated, but we have yet to take the cliffside walk to explore closer. Next time!!

Mevagissey Victorian Pier Lighthouse ~ Mevagissey, Cornwall U.K.
This lighthouse in Mevagissey, Cornwall U.K. is the first one I visited in England and easily became one of my favorite lighthouses! The lighthouse, known as the Mevagissey Victorian Pier Lighthouse, was built on the end of the new wall of the outer harbor (harbour) in 1896! Mevagissey is a beautiful and quaint fishing village with lovely walking trails, restaurants serving local seafood caught fresh, and locally owned shops for your browsing and shopping! One evening my husband and I took a walk around midnight on the outer wall down to the lighthouse. The lighthouse may seem innocuous in the daylight, but at night, in utter darkness, and being located at the end of the seawall, a perfect setting for your imagination to truly understand the vastness of the sea!

Cape Byron Lighthouse ~ Byron Bay, Australia
Off to Aussie land! The one and only lighthouse I have visited in Australia is the Cape Byron lighthouse. This majestic lighthouse, located in Byron Bay, Australia, is open to the public and I was lucky enough to have a tour of the inside. Again, close your eyes, imagine the lighthouse keeper living here and maintaining this beacon of safety, his role in protecting the sailors day and night, through all types of weather.

Egyptian Lighthouse ~ Crete, Greece
Greece anyone?! This lovely lighthouse is located in Rethymno, Greece on the isle of Crete and was built in the 1830s, when Egypt ruled Crete. The lighthouse in Rethymno harbor (harbour) is the second largest remaining Egyptian lighthouse in Crete! We visited the lovely city of Rethymno and adored the atmosphere. The lighthouse, quaint avenues, tavernas and gorgeous view of the sea were absolutely breathtaking!

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite lighthouses on the Yank side of the pond!
Marshall Point Lighthouse ~ Port Clyde, Maine U.S.
This lighthouse, the Marshall Point Lighthouse, is located in Port Clyde, Maine, on the George peninsula, overlooking both the Muscongus and Penobscot Bays. Besides it’s stunning views and old world feel, this lighthouse’s claim to fame is it’s wooden catwalk that served as the end of Forrest’s run across the country in the 1994 movie Forrest Gump! On any given day you can find numerous painters, photographers and wildlife buffs enjoying this beautiful lighthouse and it’s grounds.

Portland Head Light ~ Cape Elizabeth, Maine U.S.
Another lighthouse in Maine is the Portland Head Light, located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. This light station sits at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay, in the Gulf of Maine. The lighthouse was built in 1791, making it the oldest lighthouse in Maine! The light station is automated, with the tower, beacon, and foghorn maintained by the United States Coastguard.

Cape Neddick Lighthouse (Nubble Lighthouse) ~ Cape Neddick, York, Maine U.S.
And anyone who knows me, will know this last one is my absolute favorite lighthouse! I must have thousands of pictures of the absolutely gorgeous Cape Neddick Nubble Lighthouse located in Cape Neddick, York, Maine U.S. at Sohier Park (don’t worry, I’ll only post a few of the thousands)! I have been visiting this gorgeous place for over 30 years now. My children and grandchildren have climbed the rocky surrounding cliffs, searched for sea treasures, watched the scuba divers explore the rocky coastline, enjoyed the angry ocean storms as well as the calm and peaceful ocean views and grown up with a respect for the ocean and it’s beauty.
Cape Neddick Light, popularly known as Nubble Light, is one of the most painted and photographed lighthouses in the world!
Nubble Light is a famous American icon and a classic example of a lighthouse. An image of the lighthouse is included on the Voyager Golden Record carried by the Voyager Spacecraft as one of Earth’s most prominent man-made structures or natural features (alongside features such as the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal!)
For me Nubble is one of my happy places. It conjures a feeling of calm, peace, and beauty. There is just something about this particular lighthouse that evokes these feelings. On any given day of the year, any season, and in any weather, there is always at least one person (other than myself) who is there visiting, looking, feeling, breathing in the atmosphere, listening to the sea sounds, the sounds of the gulls, and yet, I always feel as if I am the only one there!
