Travel to the England on Your Next Vacation and Explore the Delicious Eton Mess!!

In keeping with the theme that summer is coming, let’s talk about the Eton Mess, a wonderful summery treat you can explore when you vacation in England

But first…the facts!

Eton Mess is a yummy pudding (dessert) that is said to have originated at the Eton College here in England. This popular Brit dessert was first mentioned in writing in 1893! It is served at the annual cricket match with Eton playing against Harrow School. What better way to explore when you travel to the England on your next vacation than through it’s traditional and yummy puddings!

Eton College is the largest boarding school in England and has educated prime ministers, world leaders, Nobel laureates, Academy Award and BAFTA award winning actors. Generations of aristocracy have also attended. In more recent history, Prince William and Prince Harry both attended, as well as U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, writer George Orwell (1984 and Animal Farm among his most noted novels) and actor Hugh Laurie (best known for his starring role in House M.D.). The school is located in  Eton, Berkshire, England, about an hours travel west from London.

Now, on to the yummy pudding (dessert )!

Eton Mess is a traditional desert here in England (pudding) and is typically made up of a mixture of strawberries, meringue, and whipped cream. You can add other berries as well, and sometimes I sneak in some small bits of chocolate (my Yank twist)! Some folks make their own meringue, but I have never attempted this. I generally buy the crunchy, sugary meringue at the local market.

All the above ingredients are “messed” up, the meringue crumbled into pieces, and all stirred together for an amazing dessert!

If you like something that looks a little more “presentable”:

If you can’t travel to England in the near future, try it at home and take a stay-vacation! Easy peasy and almost no prep time (as long a you don’t make your own meringue)!

HOWEVER!!!!…summer is stalling a bit! Our Brit weather is just as fickle as the weather in Massachusetts in Yank country! Absolutely pouring buckets and high winds of 30 MPH with gusts of up to 50 MPH today (April 12, 2023)!
