Saint Patrick’s Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick, is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland.

St Patricks Day is not generally celebrated her in Brit country, to my knowledge. For the Brit folks who wonder how this day is celebrated in Yank country, generally a traditional meal of corned beef and cabbage, as well as other veggies like carrots and turnip (swede), and potatoes is served. The corned beef, along with the veggies, are all boiled together for a yummy dinner!!! Also, just for fun…green beer!!!

This year, as has happened in some years past, St Patricks day falls on a Friday during the Christian Lent season. Catholics are not supposed to eat meat on Fridays during the season of Lent.

But… St. Patrick is the Boston Archdiocese’s patron saint, and a spokesman for the church said there have been a few calls asking if an exception can be made for the traditional feast of corned beef and cabbage.

“Given the importance of this feast in the life of the Archdiocese and in the lives of many Catholics, Cardinal Seán is granting a dispensation from the Friday Lenten abstinence on March 17, 2023, to those who wish to take advantage of this opportunity,” the archdiocese said in a message to parishes. “This is a one day only dispensation.”
