Maybe you’re relocating, maybe you’re travelling, but if you need (or want!) to buy clothes or shoes, you’ll need to know how Yank sizes compare to Brit sizes!

In one of my previous posts, I explored the different stores in Yank country to Brit country. Have a look at the link below to see stores listed in both countries (along with their websites) for an easy shopping comparison!

For women, the clothing sizes have a general rule:
Whatever size you are in Yank country, it is two sizes larger in Brit country. For example, if you are a size 6 in Yank in a woman’s’ dress, top or pants (trousers), then in Brit country you would be a size 10. A size 8 in Yank is a size 12 in Brit, and so on.
See the chart below for woman’s clothing sizes:
| Yank | Brit |
| 0 | 4 |
| 2 | 6 |
| 4 | 8 |
| 6 | 10 |
| 8 | 12 |
| 10 | 14 |
| 12 | 16 |
| 14 | 18 |
| 16 | 20 |
| 18 | 22 |

Generally speaking, sizes Small (S), Medium (M), Large (L), Extra Large (XL), etc. are the same across the pond. The same goes for sizes that run in measurements. If you have a 32-inch size waist in Yank country, your waist is still the same 32 inches in Brit country! (YES!!! Brit country measures clothing in inches, not centimeters!! WOOHOO!!)
As far as men’s sizes go, both Yank and Brit countries run men’s pant sizes in inch measurements for waist and length, or else men’s sizes are S, M, L, XL, etc.
Shoe sizes are different in both men and women sizes:
Women:
| YANK | BRIT |
| 4 | 1 |
| 4.5 | 1.5 |
| 5 | 2 |
| 5.5 | 2.5 |
| 6 | 3 |
| 6.5 | 3.5 |
| 7 | 4 |
| 7.5 | 4.5 |
| 8 | 5 |
| 8.5 | 5.5 |
| 9 | 6 |
| 9.5 | 6.5 |

As you can see in the above charts, the Brit sizes for women’s shoes run 3 sizes smaller than Yank. But for men’s shoes, Brit sizes run only 1 size smaller than Yank!
Clothing for the kiddies is pretty straight-forward. The Yanks have sizes such as 4, 5, 6, etc. The Brits kiddies’ clothes are in years, so 4 years, 5 years, 6 years, etc. The sizes are the same, just go by the age of the child! And, for the kiddies’ shoes, it’s the same as for men. Just go down one size in Brit country. If your child is a size 2 shoe in Yank world, then in Brit world it goes down one to a size 1! Easy!
Not rocket science, but still good to know ahead of time!!! I struggled at first, but after a few months, easy-peasy!
Of course, on both sides of the pond different brands and styles fit differently…always good to try new items on first!!!
