Old Harry Rocks is a series of chalk stacks located on the coast of Dorset, in southwest England, about 2 miles northeast of Swanage and 1 mile east of Studland.  The rocks were supposedly named as they give warning to ships to keep their distance from the treacherous cliffs. There is an old saying that speaks of someone “Playing Old Harry,” which would rather brutally mean “to ruin or destroy.” Until 1896 there was another stack known as Old Harry’s Wife, but erosion caused her to tumble into the sea, leaving just a stump.  Old Harry Rocks are part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and are managed by the National Trust.

We take the ferry over from Poole into Studland (about a fifteen-minute walk to the ferry from our condo/flat).  You can take a leisurely stroll down the beach and then begin your hike up to Old Harry or, once off the ferry, you can take a local bus to the pathways to Old Harry.

Once you reach the pathway, it should take about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace to get to Old Harry Rocks(my husband never told me about this easier route!!).  We have always taken the longer route, which takes you up a rather steep hill, but has amazing views of the outstretched ocean once you reach the top.  When we went with our sons they practically skipped to the top, while my husband and I took a couple of photo (rest) stops!

The views are amazing!

You can pack a lunch and picnic on the greens, take some breathtaking photos, enjoy the gorgeous ocean views, and watch the boats cruise below.  (I strongly suggest you at least bring some water, as this is a natural beauty spot, and there are no facilities or beverages/food available for purchase.)

On our way back down, we generally take the quicker route as we usually head to the local pub!

The Bankes Arms is located is located at Studland Bay.  This is a quaint traditional English pub.  In the warmer months, there is plentiful outside seating with gorgeous ocean views.  In the cooler months it is a fantastic place to stop in for a warming meal, cuppa tea, or hearty English pint!
