What is Pancake Day you may ask? Read on and find out!
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is a special day celebrated in many countries around the world. It is celebrated in English-speaking countries like the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada. In France, the USA and other countries, it is called ‘Mardi Gras’ or ‘Fat Tuesday’.
Basically, Pancake Day is “Fat Tuesday”. Pancake Day is always on a Tuesday in February or March and is always celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, the day before fasting begins for multitudes of Christians.
I’ve read up on Pancake Day and learned that it became popular because eggs, sugar, and fat, commonly forbidden during the Lenten fast, are used up so they will not go to waste! Now generally speaking, I don’t need a special day to enjoy pancakes. Chocolate Chip pancakes, pancakes with fruit layered on top, pancakes with bacon layered on top, heavy cream, maple syrup…delish any day of the year! But all the better to have a day strictly devoted to this yummy treat.
There are even pancake races which are held all over England! The object of the race is to get to the finishing line first while flipping a pancake in a frying pan for a certain number of times. The skill lies not so much in the running of the race but in flipping and catching the pancake, which must be intact when the finishing line is reached!
Schools across Brit country serve pancakes for lunch, restaurants have all types of pancakes on their menus for this special day!
