Places That are the Same but Different in Yank and Brit Countries!

Take a look at cities and towns with the same names across the pond!

I’ll start with where I grew up in the states!

Worcester, Massachusetts U.S. (otherwise known as Central Mass) is located about 45 minutes west of Boston. It is also called “Wormtown”! For those of us born and bred, we pronounce our city as “wu·stuh”. “Wu-stuh” was first settled as a town in 1722, and was named after the town in England from which several of the settlers had come.  A famous fact: The Declaration of Independence was first publicly read in Massachusetts by Isaiah Thomas in Worcester in July 1776!

One of Worcester’s popular landmarks is the Bancroft Tower, which was built circa 1900. The tower was built on Bancroft Hill in Worcester to honor George Bancroft, the famous historian whose birthplace was just below the tower on Salisbury Street.

Worcester, England is located in the western portion of the Midlands region southwest of West Metropolitan county in England. Worcester is actually pronounced as it is spelled in England, using all of the vowels and consonants, crazy huh?! The most famous landmark in Worcester England is the Anglican and was built between 1084 and 1504!

Let’s move one to Boston, Massachusetts and Boston, Lincolnshire, England!

Boston, Massachusetts is the capital of Massachusetts and is where the famous Boston Tea Party was held as the new settlers in America rallied against taxes required on tea from the English! American colonists rebelled against the taxes they found repressive, rallying around the cry, “no taxation without representation!”.

Boston, MA has a current population of 4,344,000! Boston was named and officially incorporated on September 30, 1630 by Puritan settlers from the English town of the same name The city became the political, commercial, financial, religious and educational center of New England from the start!

Boston Massachusetts was also the sight of Paul Revere’s famous midnight ride, alerting America’s militia of the approaching British soldiers during the American Revolutionary War against the British. His famous “one if by land, two if by sea” quote was in reference to lanterns being lit as to how the British would be approaching. This lantern signal was given at the Old North Church in Boston! The Old North Church, located in Boston’s south end, is still a very popular tourist attraction today!

Boston, Lincolnshire England is a market town and inland port in the county of Lincolnshire, England. Boston, England is 160 miles north of London and has a population of  70,798. Boston England was a medieval town and is famous for its traditional markets, which were established more than 450 years ago! That’s older than the city of Boston, Massachusetts!

Boston England’s most notable landmark is St Botolph’s Church (“The Stump”), the largest parish church in England, which is visible from miles away across the flat lands of Lincolnshire. The church was completed between 1510 and 1520!

Let’s move to London! London, England and London, Ohio U.S.!

London England has so many world renown iconic images! Just to share a few from my own travels:

London is the capital of England, with a population of 9,541,000! London is located in southeastern England and the River Thames runs alongside. London is one of the world’s oldest great cities! Its history spans close to two millennia! London is the country’s economic, transportation and cultural center. In addition to the pics above of just a few of London’s iconic landmarks, London is also home to Westminster Abbey, House of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral, Kensington Palace, Wembley Stadium, Millennium Bridge and of course…Abbey Road (for all those Beatles fans!).

London, Ohio on the other hand….has a population 2,404. It is located in the state of Ohio, in the midwest portion of the U.S. (about 25 miles southwest of the capital of Columbus, OH). The most famous piece of trivia I could find about London, Ohio U.S. is that the water tower, fire department, and London High School were featured in a commercial for the Nike brand, which promoted the 2012 Olympics, which was held in….you guessed it….London, England!!!!

A few more cities to note:

Oxford, England ~home to one of the most famous universities, Oxford University, population 158,000.

Oxford, Maine U.S. ~ popular points of interest? Oxford Casino, Oxford Plains Speedway and Ultimate Dog Sledding! Population of 4,104.

Cambridge England ~ famous for Cambridge University, founded in 1209, and considered one of the best universities in the world. Population of 129,000 (approx. 25,000 of them are students!).

Cambridge, Massachusetts U.S. ~ was named in honor of Cambridge University in England! Cambridge, Massachusetts is home to Harvard University, also considered to be one of the best universities in the world (#3)! Also, where MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is located. Population of 122, 374 (approx. 18,933 of them are students!).

So many things different, but so many the same. We are two countries intertwined by our histories. There are dozens of smaller towns and cities in Yank country (mainly in New England), which were named after English towns and cities by the original settlers who set off from England and made their new home in America.
