Let’s pick apart some more words–just for a giggle~
Steeping vs. Brewing:
I wrote a post a few days ago, and talked about things the Brits Do Well—have a look:

In that post I talk about how much more flavor the Brit tea has and how “steeping” tea is done with such flare here in Brit country. My husband (who proof reads my posts), had no idea what I meant. I truly had to google the definition of it to explain what I was trying to convey!
gerund or present participle: steeping
soak (food or tea) in water or other liquid so as to extract its flavour or to soften it. “the chillies are steeped in olive oil”
He ever so politely told me, in his lovely civilized Brit way, that this should be called “brewing”, not “steeping”. Every day there is at least one word we need to have a very civilized Brit discussion about!
Cotton Candy vs. Candy Floss:
Now I don’t know about you, but Cotton Candy sounds so much more appealing to me than Candy Floss! All I can think of is flossing my teeth! And that is not quite as tasty as Cotton Candy!
But hey…you be the judge!
Homey vs. Homely:
Okay–this was a tough one to pick up on without being rude! I’d heard the word “homely” a few times here in Brit country:
“Oh, what a homely flat you have!”
“You’ve added your touch to everything! It looks so homely now.”
First thing I thought was “Wow, that’s cold!” Even us Yanks aren’t that brutal! So…thank goodness for my Texan neighbor who became such an awesome friend. I posed the question to her: “Why are people calling things “homely”?” She of course laughed, said she had the same reaction at first, then proceeded to explain to me that the Brit word for “homely” actually means “homey” to us Yanks! Well, thank goodness she helped me figure that out! My ego was taking a beating!
