Yummy Yank Food Items Not Found In England

So here is a list of Yank food products not available in UK (at least not that I could find!)

So, you’ve decided to visit Merry Ole England…or maybe even relocate!!  There are a few things I miss and have a really hard time finding in any conventional shops when it comes to food items.  When I head back to the states (generally every 4-5 months), I bring a shopping list and bring back some of my faves!!  It’s too costly to have things shipped/mailed, so…. checked baggage works (don’t ask my husband how many times I’ve had to book an extra luggage bag for the trip home!)

For instance:

Miracle Whip—I know, you either love it or hate it.  I happen to love it!  And I use it generously in my pasta salads, on sandwiches, tuna fish, crab meat, to make tartar sauce…yummmm!  I have never seen Miracle Whip in any store here.

Cocktail Sauce—you know, Heinz, Bookbinders, McCormick’s!  I use it for dipping shrimp (prawns) mostly, but also great to add to meatloaf, or to top off an omelet!  No such thing here.  England has a Seafood Sauce (made by Colman’s), but it is cream based, light and fresh.  Not like the cocktail sauce from Heinz, etc. which has that horse-radishy kick!

Nestle Tollhouse Chocolate Chips—yes!!!!  Who knew that this was not a worldwide delicacy??!!  I always pack some on my return trip from the states.  I made homemade Nestle Tollhouse cookies after I’d been here for a few months.  I shared some with my neighbor (who happens to be a Texan married to a Brit) and WOW!!!  Made friends in an instant.  I also bring back 3-4 bags of the mini Nestle Tollhouse chips—love dipping fruit in them, I cook them into pancakes (Flapjacks or Hotcakes), mix them in with my yogurt (leave it to a Yank to make something healthy NOT!).  Basically, I put them on anything!

Cheetos Cheese Puffs—who doesn’t love a food that turns your fingers and teeth orange??!!  They have some variations over here to try, (Wotsits Grand and Tesco brand Cheese Balls)—but I’ve not found one that meets the original US Cheetos flavor!  Could be that here in England they don’t use as many preservatives and sodium —just a thought!

Funyuns—same as Cheetos Cheese Puffs—they do sell them here, but don’t taste quite the same.

A1 Sauce—I use this with steak for dipping, also in meatloaf or mixed in with hamburg (minced beef) for a great tasting burger!  They do have Heinz HP sauce, but again not quite the same—close though!!

Canned Clams—Yes, I’m from New England, and our famous New England Calm “Chowdah” is a must!  I know, I know—fresh clams are def much better, but…we all cheat! (And no, no clams here either…cockles and mussels tho! TRUTH!!)  So, yes, once again checked luggage on the way back from a visit to the states.  I have made some “chowda” here and shared it with my in-laws—best they ever had so I was told!!  I think their cholesterol levels have shot up since that treat—sticks of butter, heavy cream, potatoes, maybe even some bacon bits…I’m drooling here!!

Ginger Ale—Good news!! I did find ginger ale here, not ginger beer, but just like the states, even the same brands!! The difference here is you will find it in the mixer section for alcoholic drinks. It will NOT be in the soft drink/soda aisle. You don’t wanna know how long it took me to figure that out …

Now with all that said, there are some stores that actually have an American Grocery aisle, but the things I’ve listed I have not seen there.  There are also some websites here that cater to Yanks living in Brit world and that do have some of the items I’ve mentioned above.  I’ve listed the sites below that I have used but take a look and decide for yourself if ordering online is the way for you to go, or if you visit the states enough to satisfy your indulgences.  Always a good option to have your peeps bring a few treats with them when they come to visit!!
